Chandigarh, The ruling Congress in Punjab has won the most seats in the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections as counting was underway on Saturday.

In Patiala, the Congress has won 43 Panchayat Samiti seats and the Shiromani Akali Dal four.

The Akalis suffered a humiliating defeat in their home turf Muktsar as the Congress won 10 of the 13 Zila Parishad zones.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has urged the State Election Commission (SEC) to order re-poll in the remaining 110 polling booths and defer the counting of votes in the respective constituencies to ensure full justice to voters as well as to the contesting candidates.

Besides, the SAD also demanded complete video-graphy of all the counting centers- the hall as well as outer complex- and direct the observers to be present at the centers from beginning till end of counting

Allaying the fear of PSPCL employees regarding dominance of private players in the Power Sector due to closure of 880 MW thermal units in Bathinda and Ropar, Mr. GS Kangar, Power Minister Punjab, informed that the State Government has approved a Super Critical Thermal Plant for Ropar which will have 5 units of 800 MW generation capacity each. Besides, a 60 MW Biomass Plant and a 100 MW Solar Plant are also coming up soon. So, “the closure of existing units by no means amount to dominance of private sector; it is just a switchover from the existing technology to the cheaper, greener, state -of -art technology,” said he.

Chandigarh, The Punjab Cabinet on Thursday reviewed the arrangements and preparedness for the Paddy procurement season beginning from October 1, with Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh issuing directives for smooth and hassle-free procurement of the grain.

An official spokesperson said elaborate arrangements were being made to procure the expected 200 LMT Paddy.

Chandigarh, The Punjab Cabinet led by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has given approval for setting up a Ropeway between Sri Anandpur Sahib and Naina Devi ji in Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode to further promote tourism in the state.

The ropeway would facilitate lakhs of devotees visiting these two historic and religious sites in a smooth and hassle-free manner, according to an official spokesperson, who pointed out that Sri Anandpur Sahib in Punjab and Naina Devi ji in Himachal Pradesh were famous pilgrim destinations visited by devotees from across the globe.

After the reports of wrongdoings in some polling booths of Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samitis, The State Election Commission, Punjab has ordered re polling on 53 polling booths of eight districts. Voters will recast their votes on September 21 in these polling stations from 8 am to 4 pm.

Spokesperson of the commission said that it includes 36 Polling booths of Sri Mukatsar Sahib, 8 polling booths of Amritsar, one booth each of Moga, Fazilka and Faridkot Districts and two booths each of Patiala and Bathinda and Ludhiana, where re polling has been ordered.
