Why he had banned government recruitment during his term as chief minister-SAD

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today asked Punjab Congress president Mr Amarinder Singh to tell Punjabis why he had banned government recruitment during his term as chief minister and how people could ever trust him again to create new jobs. In a statement here, SAD spokesman Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said not only did Amarinder ban recruitment during the very start of his tenure as chief minister but lifted it selectively for a few jobs to please his cronies. “One such instance was hiring of Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs). We all know former media advisor BIS Chahals’ son was selected as a DSP due to this largesse in the sports quota, for laurels won by him in the field of yoga”.

Stating that this was how Amarinder worked, the Akali leader said even after the Amarinder government issued a press release saying it had lifted the recruitment ban in 2004, the same was exposed in court. On February 27, 2004 the State government’s counsel told the Punjab and Haryana high court that the council of ministers had not lifted the ban on new recruitment. He said this matter reached the courts because citizens asked why DSPs were being recruited if there was a ban on recruitment.

“This is a typical example of the cronyism practiced by the Amarinder government in which a coterie including Chahal and other pals who were partners during leisurely activities after sun down ran the government according to their whims and fancies”, Dr Cheema added.

Dr Cheema said the truth was that Amarinder banned government recruitment at the start of his tenure in 2002 and then lifted recruitment to help his chosen buddies for few choice jobs only. “Thousands of vacancies which were created during this period were not filled. Not only this, many posts were abolished following superannuation of personnel holding them. Protesting employees were brutalized and there was a case of women protesters even being molested during an agitation at Ludhiana”, he said.

The Akali leader said following this it fell upon the SAD-BJP government to correct this anti-youth and anti-Punjab trend. He said the S Parkash Singh Badal government was proud to have created 2.5 lakh jobs during the last about ten years. “We had to strive hard and recreate new jobs to adjust our youth. Not only this. We have given permanent government service to around 30,000 youth who were on contractual jobs since the last three years”.

Asking the youth to evaluate these facts and figures themselves, the SAD leader asked them how they could believe a failed chief minister like Amarinder Singh who had banned government recruitment to give them jobs again. He said what was galling was that Amarinder had not even apologized to the youth for spoiling their future. “He has the temerity of making wild promises with the sole aim of attaining power. You know full well that once elected Amarinder will again be surrounded by his coterie and will give choice jobs to their kith and kin only”, he added.
