Modi government's policies are anti-farmer -Sunil Jakhar

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president and Gurdaspur Lok Sabha member Mr. Sunil Jakhar, who was known for vehemently raising issues of the farming community, today voiced the problems of Punjab's potato growers in the Lok Sabha.

Speaking during the Question Hour, Mr. Jakhar said that during last year potato growers of Punjab faced heavy loss even after bumper production. As production increased last year no one was ready to buy potatoes and the farmers thrown potatoes on road. He said that union Government has no policy to deal with sudden downfall in price of crops due to bumper crops. He said that whenever the crop is good, the price falls immediately and the government does not help the farmers.

Mr. Jakhar said that earlier when the production decreased in 2016, Modi government had imposed the export duty and also imported potatoes in country to create such conditions that the farmers could not get good price and when the bumper production was happened in 2017, the Central Government has not done anything to give handsome prices to potato growers.

Mr. Jakhar said that potato is being planted in 90 thousand hectare in Punjab and last year's distressed farmers have reduced the area under potato by 5% this time and due to this it is seem that farmer could get better price but the Union Government should ensure that Farmers can get better returns every year.

Mr. Jakhar described the BJP government of the Center as anti-farmer and said that the government ran away from giving any suitable answer to this issue in Lok Sabha and the Agriculture Minister did not give a proper response which reflects the Government’s negative approach to farmers.
