Heavy Rain in Japan Triggers Train Service Suspensions and Landslide Risks

Tokyo, Nov 2 (IANS) – Japan is currently grappling with heavy rainfall that has led to significant disruptions in train services and heightened risks of flooding and landslides in various regions. The Tokaido Shinkansen line, a critical transport route between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka, halted operations around 7:15 p.m. local time due to the severe weather conditions.

The intense downpours have been exacerbated by warm, moist air, leading to record November rainfall at 223 observation points across western and eastern Japan by 6 p.m. local time. This extreme weather is expected to continue into the night, raising concerns over rising river levels and potential flooding in areas such as Shimane, Yamaguchi, Shizuoka, and Kanagawa.

Authorities have issued flood alerts for multiple rivers in Kyoto, Shimane, and Shizuoka, while landslide warnings are in effect for Shizuoka and Kanagawa prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has advised residents to exercise caution against landslides, flooding of low-lying areas, and rapidly rising river waters. They also recommend avoiding unnecessary travel, especially near rivers.

Additionally, a tornado warning has been issued in Shizuoka due to the risk of high winds in some areas.
