Home Minister Amit Shah also posted his wishes on X, underscoring the festival’s significance. "Infinite best wishes to all the countrymen on the sacred festival of Bhai Dooj. I hope this festival of love, dedication, and devotion brings immense happiness in everyone's life, " he wrote.
Celebrated across India under names like Bhau Beej, Bhai Tika, and Bhai Phonta, Bhai Dooj is observed two days after Diwali. It honors the sibling bond, with sisters praying for their brothers' long lives, while brothers promise protection and support.
Rooted in mythology, Bhai Dooj traditions are traced back to the story of Yamraj, the god of death, and his sister Yamuna. According to legend, Yamuna invited Yamraj to her home, offering him hospitality and a warm meal. Touched by her devotion, Yamraj blessed her and declared that any brother receiving a tilak from his sister on this day would be protected from untimely death.
Bhai Dooj marks a meaningful conclusion to the Diwali festivities, as families gather to celebrate the enduring love and commitment between siblings.
