Delhi-NCR Blanketed in Thick Smog, Air Quality Plummets to Hazardous Levels

Kaumimarg Bureau / IANS | November 13, 2024 11:37 AM

New Delhi, Nov 13 – Dense smog engulfed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) early Wednesday, reducing visibility and worsening air quality. Delhi recorded an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 349 at 6 a.m., categorizing it as "very poor." Some areas, such as Aya Nagar, hit "severe" levels with an AQI of 406, while other parts of NCR, including Gurugram and Ghaziabad, reported AQI levels between 266 and 289.

According to IQAir, a global air monitoring platform, Delhi’s AQI even touched a hazardous 1, 133 in certain regions, with PM2.5 identified as the primary pollutant. The thick smog, combined with moderate fog, significantly reduced visibility, prompting health concerns for residents, especially those with respiratory issues.

Experts link this seasonal spike in pollution to ongoing stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana, where AQI levels have also reached "very poor" status. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) warns that the hazy conditions are likely to persist into the evening.Delhi-NCR Blanketed in Thick Smog, Air Quality Plummets to Hazardous Levels
