UN Expands Hindi Communication Efforts, Plans New WhatsApp Channel

United Nations, Nov 23 (IANS) — The United Nations (UN) has reaffirmed its commitment to connecting with Hindi-speaking audiences, with plans to launch a Hindi-language WhatsApp channel soon. Speaking at a Hindi Diwas event, Ian Phillips, the UN's Director of News and Media, emphasized the role of Hindi in promoting UN priorities on peace, human rights, sustainable development, and climate action.

Highlighting India's influence in the digital and AI spaces, Phillips noted the importance of Hindi for reaching millions, including future global leaders. The celebration was attended by Indian MPs, diplomats, and representatives from countries with close linguistic ties to India, such as Nepal, Mauritius, Guyana, and Suriname, who reflected on Hindi’s cultural importance.

India's Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, spoke of Hindi as a unifying language that has preserved cultural heritage and played a central role in India’s independence movement. Representatives from Mauritius, Nepal, and Guyana highlighted Hindi’s enduring impact, with each country’s Hindi-speaking communities preserving traditions and integrating Hindi vocabulary into local dialects.

The event also featured Hindi competitions organized by India’s Permanent Mission, celebrating the language’s global significance and its role as a bridge across diverse communities.
