Washington, Dec 27 (IANS) – The US-India Business Council (USIBC) has paid tribute to former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, acknowledging his pivotal contributions to strengthening US-India relations.

In a statement, the USIBC, representing leading global companies operating across the United States, India, and the Indo-Pacific, described Dr. Singh as “rightly regarded as an architect of the modern bilateral relationship.”

USIBC President Ambassador Atul Keshap highlighted Dr. Singh’s achievements, stating, "Dr. Singh played a key role in elevating US-India ties, modernizing the relationship, and embarking both democracies on a steady path of strategic, economic, and technological convergence."

Legacy of Transformative Agreements
The USIBC credited Dr. Singh for his instrumental role in finalizing the India-US Civil Nuclear Agreement of 2008, a landmark deal that ended India's decades-long nuclear isolation and fostered greater diplomatic ties with major powers like the US, Japan, France, Australia, and Germany.

The agreement not only enhanced India’s status as a responsible nuclear power but also served as a cornerstone for advancing strategic and economic cooperation between the two nations.

Economic Reforms of 1991
The council also recognized Dr. Singh’s role as Finance Minister in 1991 when he spearheaded the liberalization of India’s economy. These reforms opened India’s markets to global trade and investment, laying the foundation for sustained economic growth and international partnerships.

USIBC’s Tribute
The USIBC conveyed its condolences to Dr. Singh’s family and the people of India. "He will be remembered in America with honor and fondness for his gentle yet transformative leadership, " said Ambassador Keshap.

The council, established in 1975, continues to build upon the legacy of leaders like Dr. Singh by fostering connections between businesses and governments in both countries, ensuring that the strategic partnership remains robust and forward-looking.

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s contributions to US-India ties and global diplomacy leave an enduring legacy celebrated by leaders, organizations, and citizens worldwide.
