Moscow- Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has raised concerns over the potential for nuclear escalation in the Ukraine conflict while reiterating Russia's willingness to engage in dialogue.
In an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson, released on X (formerly Twitter), Lavrov discussed Russia-US relations, the Ukraine crisis, and broader geopolitical challenges. He warned about statements from some Pentagon and NATO officials discussing "limited nuclear strikes" on Russia, asserting that such actions could lead to uncontrollable consequences.
“Russia’s military doctrine emphasizes the necessity of avoiding a nuclear war, ” Lavrov stated, referencing the 2022 Joint Statement by leaders of the five Nuclear-Weapon States, which declared, "A nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought."
Criticism of NATO and Western Policies
Lavrov reiterated Russia’s longstanding opposition to NATO’s eastward expansion, blaming the West for ignoring Russia’s security concerns. He accused US policymakers of promoting a "rules-based order" that prioritizes American dominance over multilateralism.
Call for Equitable Dialogue
Despite these criticisms, Lavrov expressed Russia’s openness to dialogue, provided it is conducted under equitable terms.
This warning adds to the ongoing tensions in the region, with both NATO and Russia accusing each other of escalating the situation.
