United Nations, Dec 27 (IANS) – UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed grave concern over the escalating conflict between Yemen's Houthi rebels and Israel, urging an immediate cessation of hostilities, according to a statement issued by his spokesperson.
The Secretary-General specifically condemned Israeli airstrikes on critical infrastructure in Yemen, including Sanaa International Airport, Red Sea ports, and power stations, which have reportedly caused numerous casualties. Among those injured was a crew member of the UN Humanitarian Air Service.
A high-level UN delegation, led by World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was present at Sanaa airport during the strikes. The delegation had been discussing the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen and advocating for the release of detained UN personnel.
Call for Restraint
The UN chief reiterated his plea for all involved parties to cease military actions and exercise maximum restraint to prevent further escalation. He also highlighted the dangers posed by airstrikes on Red Sea ports and Sanaa airport, which are vital for humanitarian operations in Yemen.
Houthi Attacks on Israel
The conflict has intensified following the Houthi group’s claims of multiple attacks on Israel:
December 25: The Houthis announced drone strikes targeting Tel Aviv and Ashkelon, focusing on "vital" and "industrial" zones.
A hypersonic ballistic missile attack on Tel Aviv was also claimed by the Houthis, though Israeli defense systems reportedly intercepted the missile.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea stated that these operations would persist until Israel ceases its offensive on Gaza and lifts the blockade.
International Implications
The Secretary-General’s statement underlines the potential risks of broader regional destabilization stemming from this conflict. Guterres urged a return to diplomacy and a focus on humanitarian efforts to alleviate the suffering of civilians in Yemen and the region.
The situation continues to evolve, with no immediate response from Israeli authorities regarding the Houthi attacks.
