Ottawa, Nov 15 (IANS) – Around 55, 000 Canadian postal workers represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have begun a nationwide strike, citing stalled negotiations with Canada Post. The CUPW announced the strike after a year of bargaining without significant progress, according to Xinhua news agency.
In a midnight statement, the CUPW described the strike as a “last resort, ” emphasizing that it had hoped Canada Post would work towards solutions addressing postal workers' concerns. The union’s demands include fair wages, safer working conditions, a dignified retirement, and the expansion of public postal services.
"Negotiated collective agreements are possible, " the CUPW stated, "but Canada Post needs to engage meaningfully to resolve both longstanding and recent issues."
This strike could disrupt postal services across Canada, affecting both businesses and residents relying on mail and package deliveries.
