Ottawa, Dec 7: Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly has announced the launch of Canada's Arctic Foreign Policy, a strategic framework designed to enhance Canada's diplomatic engagement and leadership in the Arctic region.

This policy focuses on addressing immediate needs while ensuring adaptability to future challenges. According to the Foreign Minister, the strategy will fortify Canada’s presence and foster partnerships in the Arctic.

Four Pillars of the Arctic Foreign Policy
Asserting Canada's Sovereignty: Ensuring the security and integrity of Canada's Arctic territories.
Advancing Interests Through Pragmatic Diplomacy: Promoting Canada's priorities through cooperation and practical solutions.
Leadership in Arctic Governance: Addressing multilateral challenges such as climate change and sustainable development.
Inclusive Arctic Diplomacy: Incorporating Indigenous perspectives and fostering partnerships with northern communities.
Key Objectives
One of the policy’s central goals is to deepen cooperation across the North American Arctic, encompassing Alaska (US), northern Canada, and Greenland (Denmark). This region holds unique significance due to its geographical proximity and the deep ancestral ties of Indigenous Peoples.

Significance of the Canadian Arctic
The Canadian Arctic constitutes 40% of Canada’s territory and over 70% of its coastline.
It is home to many Canadians, including Indigenous communities with long-standing connections to the land.
The policy reinforces Canada’s commitment to preserving the Arctic's environmental, cultural, and economic sustainability while addressing challenges such as climate change, international cooperation, and Indigenous empowerment.
