Manila, Nov 24 (IANS) — A devastating fire on Sunday left approximately 2, 000 families homeless in Manila after flames ravaged a densely populated residential area, local officials reported.
The fire, which broke out in the morning, destroyed around 1, 000 homes built with light, combustible materials, according to Alejandro Ramos from the Manila City Fire Department. The Philippine Air Force deployed helicopters to drop water over the affected area near Manila Bay, while the Philippine Coast Guard contributed four fire boats to the efforts.
Firefighters faced significant challenges due to strong winds from the bay and narrow streets, which hindered their access. Around 30 firetrucks responded, but crowded streets slowed their movement as residents fled the area.
The Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office declared the fire extinguished by 2 p.m. local time. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported, though some firefighters sustained injuries. Authorities are now investigating the cause of the blaze.
